Window shopping for work: Why it’s not the best way to advance your career

Window shopping for work: Why it’s not the best way to advance your career

In the world of recruitment a ‘passive’ jobseeker is someone who may be interested in a suitable job if it comes their way, but who is not actively looking for their next role.

These passive jobseekers scan job boards from time to time and ask to receive updates from recruiters. They like to know who is hiring and what skills employers currently value. But they are not actively searching or applying for jobs themselves.

Is this sort of “window-shopping” approach a good idea? Well, the answer is yes and no. Regardless of what stage your career is at, it is always a good idea to keep your eye on the jobs market.

Hiring intentions and salaries both change according to market conditions, so it makes sense for anyone who is serious about developing their career long-term to be aware of the current trends, even if they are not actively looking for their next job.

However, when you are ready to advance your career, a passive approach will not work. You must be proactive in your job search when the time is right to move on and up, rather than sitting back and hoping the right job comes to you.

This starts with updating your CV and online profile. It is also a courtesy to get back in touch with your referees and let them know that you are on the job market.

If you do not become proactive when you are ready to advance, your career will stagnate.

So, while window shopping has its place and keeps you informed of market conditions and the skills employers are prioritising, there comes a time when you must get active in order to secure a job offer.
