Boost your social media profile to stand out

Boost your social media profile to stand out

In a recent online poll, Hays found that 48 per cent of Hongkongers update their CV frequently, but only 25 per cent also update their professional social media profiles. There is clearly room for improvement in how Hong Kong jobseekers maintain their online profiles when searching for a new job.

Utilising the power and relevance of social media to promote yourself is important, as potential employers will often turn to social media to find out more about you once they have looked at your CV. If you are among those not regularly updating your online profile, we advise you to review it – and if you don’t like what you see, change it.

When you update your CV, it is important to make the corresponding changes to your online profile, and vice-versa. Try to maintain consistency in your employment history, job responsibilities, profile image, tagline, about-me introduction and tone of voice.

You can strengthen your online “brand” in a number of ways, such as by using a professional-looking profile picture, since people are unlikely to connect with an anonymous profile. It also helps connections recognise you if they meet you.

Take the time to write a compelling biography so potential employers can learn what sets you apart.

Get involved in online conversations to demonstrate your expertise. Just make sure you think before you post, as many potential employers will actively search social media during the recruiting process of a potential candidate.

Finally, remember it is important to protect your privacy online. Know the privacy settings for each social channel and only allow your audience to see what you want them to see.
